Dhanteras

Dhanteras, celebrated on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartik, is an auspicious day marking the beginning of Diwali festivities. The history / popular stories and legends associated with this day:

1. The Tale of Dhanvantari

Dhanteras is also known as "Dhanvantari Trayodashi." According to Hindu belief, Dhanvantari, the Divine Physician and the God of Ayurveda, emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean). He appeared holding a pot of Amrit (the nectar of immortality) and blessed the Gods with health and vitality. This day is thus celebrated to honor Dhanvantari and promote good health and well-being, making it common for people to buy gold, silver, and utensils, which are symbols of prosperity and longevity.

2. The Story of King Hima and Yama

Another popular story involves a king's son who was predicted to die on the fourth day of his marriage due to a snakebite. His devoted wife, determined to protect him, laid out all her gold, silver, and precious ornaments around him. She also lit numerous lamps and stayed up all night, singing and telling stories to keep him awake. When Yama, the God of death, arrived disguised as a serpent, He was dazzled by the radiant light of the jewelry and lamps. Distracted, He could not take the prince's life and left quietly, sparing him. This is why, on Dhanteras, people buy metals and keep lamps burning all night to drive away evil and bring in positive energy.

3. Lord Kuber and Wealth

Dhanteras is also associated with Kuber, the God of wealth. People believe that praying to Him on this day brings prosperity and abundance. Buying precious metals or wealth symbols is considered a way to invite blessings from Kuber.

Each of these legends emphasizes aspects of wealth, health, and protection. As a result, Dhanteras is celebrated as a day to buy auspicious items, illuminate homes, and welcome prosperity and good fortune into one’s life.

Wishing Health, Wealth & Prosperity be integral part of your life.
